In recent years I have ridden many bikes. Some very fast but uncomfortable, some very comfortable but too slow. Then there’s the Trek Domane SLR 7 Gen 4<\/b>, which has managed to do something rare: bring together the two souls of touring cycling-that of the cyclist who wants to be comfortable in the saddle for hours and the cyclist who likes to “go fast.” <\/p>

It is a bike that I wanted to test not in the lab, but in the field. I took it with me to Sardinia, all along the west coast, and then to Sicily, where I rode hundreds of kilometers through the island’s most authentic and bumpy back roads. <\/p>

On both trips, I loaded her up, pushed her to the limit and asked her to be everything: travel bike, adventure companion, reliable vehicle in all conditions. And she has always responded, with quiet elegance and surprising solidity. <\/p>

What is Domane, and why I decided to try it out<\/h4>

The Trek Domane has been one of the world’s best-known endurance bikes for years. It is designed to withstand the cobblestones of the Northern European classics, offer comfort along the trails and accompany those who spend many hours in the saddle. <\/p>

What prompted me to try it was not just the fame. It was the promise, implicit in the design and philosophy of the model, of a riding experience that put the pleasure of pedaling at the center. I needed a bike that could go beyond pure performance and offer something more: the feeling that every mile could be experienced, not just passed. <\/p>

The Domane SLR 7 is built with Trek’s most advanced OCLV 800 carbon<\/b>. Light but strong, responsive but able to absorb vibration. The frame has an endurance geometry, so it is more relaxed than a pure racing bike, but never sluggish or lazy. <\/p>

The real magic lies in the rear IsoSpeed<\/b> system, a Trek-developed technology that allows the seat tube to flex in a controlled manner, damping vibration and absorbing bumps from uneven surfaces. It’s a detail that makes all the difference, especially when you ride for days and rack up hours in the saddle. <\/p>

The feeling, when riding, is that of a “living” bike, working with you. It supports you, protects you. It seems to tell you, “Go, that I am there.”<\/i> <\/p>

<\/p>

Sardinia: the west coast and the 35 mm Pirelli Cinturato.<\/h4>

The first major test I did was in Sardinia, traveling the entire west coast from north to south. A wild, wonderful and little traveled route. The roads are a continuous seesaw of curves, elevation changes, ruined asphalt and breathtaking views. <\/p>

For the occasion, I chose to mount Pirelli Cinturato 35 mm<\/b>, in a tubeless configuration, precisely in order to tackle the more ruined sections with greater peace of mind. And the choice turned out to be apt. The bike, despite being a road bike, accepted the wide tires without any problems, turning into a kind of all-road capable of floating on the worst asphalt without losing either speed or control. <\/p>

On the technical descents between Bosa and Oristano, in the ups and downs of the Iglesiente, the Domane demonstrated impressive stability. The Bontrager Aeolus Pro 37 wheels performed excellently, providing smoothness and safety even when the terrain became rougher. <\/p>

Sicily: hundreds of miles on the island’s truest back roads<\/h4>

In Sicily, I wanted to test the Domane in even harsher conditions. During my last winter stay on the island, I rode hundreds of miles along some of the best “worst” back roads in the region-the ones that local cyclists know well. <\/p>

It was here that the Domane really showed what it is made of. Driving it on these roads was a unique experience: comfortable, smooth, safe. Never a vibration out of place, even with real sieve-like stretches. The comfort was such that I often forgot I was on a road bike. <\/p>

And despite the difficulty of the terrain, the bike allowed me to maintain good hourly averages, making long transfers much more efficient than a pure gravel bike.<\/p>

At the heart of the drivetrain is the Shimano Ultegra Di2 12-speed groupset. An apt choice, offering precise, smooth and silent shifting in every situation. Uphill, even under stress, gear shifting is immediate. On the flat, the progression is natural. Downhill, you forget about shifting: the bike seems to know what it has to do. <\/p>

The Di2 is a system I have come to really appreciate on the road: no cables to adjust, no uncertainties. It always works. And it makes you focus on what really matters: pedaling. <\/p>

Smart details: everything in the right place<\/strong><\/h4>

One of the most successful aspects of the Domane is the integration of details designed for the traveling cyclist. The most obvious is the storage compartment integrated into the down tube, which allows you to arrange multitools, inner tubes, CO2 or small items neatly and accessibly. It seems like a small thing, but it changes the way you organize your bike. <\/p>

Other details:<\/p>

– Fully integrated cable routing for a clean, aerodynamic look.
– Fender compatibility, ideal for winter use or on wet tracks.
– Space for tires up to 38 mm, which greatly expands the possibilities for use.<\/p>

Real performance: uphill, downhill, on long days<\/strong><\/h4>

While not a race bike, the Domane surprises even when you pick up the pace. When climbing, the response is progressive, not explosive but continuous. The position in the saddle allows you to push without soreness. Downhill, stability is one of its strong points: it gives you confidence, even when fully loaded or on slippery surfaces. <\/p>

And then there is endurance over the long run. This is where the Domane is at its best. After six to seven hours in the saddle, you can feel the whole difference. Your hands are still alive, your back is not destroyed, and your head is clear. You realize that you can go on. You can go another 50 km without any problems.
