FOURTH EPISODE OF THE SERIES ON BIKEPACKING
Security and online resources
Introduction
Welcome to the fourth and final episode of our series dedicated to bikepacking! Today we dive into a crucial topic for all cyclists: bike safety and the online resources that can make any adventure safer, more organized and enjoyable. Traveling by bike is a unique experience, but it requires care, preparation, and a good dose of respect for yourself and the environment. In this article we will explore together how to meet the challenges of the road and how to make the most of digital resources to plan the perfect trip.
If you are ready to discover new tools and practical tips to improve your two-wheeled experience, read on!
Bike Safety
When you are riding, safety is never secondary. It is the top priority, and ensuring it means carefully planning the route, assessing risks, and trying to anticipate unforeseen events while keeping calm at all times. My experiences and the many courses I have taken have taught me that careful planning can prevent most outdoor problems. Always devote sufficient time to preparation.
Remember that while cycling, we often share the road with cars, and motorists’ attention can be poor. It is therefore critical to always wear a helmet properly and make yourself clearly visible with front and rear lights. Recently, devices such as the Garmin Varia radar, which alerts you to an approaching vehicle, have been developed. I covered this topic in an article you can read here.
Weather conditions can significantly affect your trip, so it is important to evaluate them carefully. Remember that we are small before Mother Nature; respect her and do not defy her. Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking and eating regularly. On a bicycle, your body is the engine, so taking care of it is crucial.
Bike maintenance is also critical. Before a long ride, give your bike a thorough checkup to make sure all its components are in working order. Also learn the basics of mechanics, such as changing a flat tire; it’s one of the most common problems you might encounter.
Listen to your body and respect yourself. In an emergency, you will need to be able to rely on yourself, so make sure you always have a charged and protected cell phone with you, the first tool you will need to call for help. For this reason, I do not recommend using your cell phone as a navigator while driving.
Cycling safety is crucial, and as you travel you will discover aspects of yourself you did not know. Gradually approach bicycle touring and learn from others’ mistakes to avoid repeating them.
First aid kit
Having a first aid kit on hand is essential when traveling, especially on a bicycle. These kits, easily available online at affordable prices, already include everything you need to deal with the most common medical emergencies. In addition to the first aid kit, it is essential to carry an emergency blanket with you at all times. This simple, inexpensive tool can make all the difference by protecting you from hypothermia.
Your first aid kit and emergency blanket should be permanent items in your gear, regardless of the length of your trip. For longer adventures, it is also advisable to carry some basic medicines, such as painkillers and anti-inflammatories, to handle minor health emergencies.
While traveling, maintaining a high level of personal hygiene is crucial. Trying to wash your clothes regularly and paying attention to your personal hygiene can prevent discomfort and health problems. When I travel, I never forgo carrying a variety of creams and hygiene products to help me feel clean and fresh despite the challenges posed by the outdoor environment and days in the saddle.
Online Resources
Over the years, I have accumulated thousands of miles riding my bicycle, undertaking solo trips, in the company of friends and guests, either completely independently or on organized tours, sometimes with the assistance of a support vehicle. These varied experiences have enriched my personal and professional background, and I have decided to share them on my blog, where I recount the adventures, challenges and wonderful discoveries made along the way. I invite you to explore these stories [nel mio blog] and share your impressions and thoughts. I hope my stories can inspire you to embark on your own cycling adventures.
For a deeper dive into one of my most significant adventures, I suggest you watch this video in which I narrate in detail the journey to the North Cape. This account, presented in conversation with Pietro Franzese, offers an intimate and detailed perspective on the travel experience, the lessons learned and the encounters made along the way.
