SHOKZ BONE CONDUCTION HEADPHONES
Bicycle safety and music
My experience with Shokz headphones
If you are an avid cyclist like me, you know how important it is to find the right balance between enjoying the ride and staying alert on the road. My search for a practical and safe solution led me to Shokz bone conduction headphones, a device that has revolutionized the way I experience bike rides.
What is bone conduction?
Before we get into that, a bit of technological context. Bone-conduction headphones work differently from classic in-ear or over-ear headphones: they transmit sound through your jaw bones, leaving your ears completely free. This means you can listen to your favorite music or podcasts without isolating yourself from outside noise, which is crucial when pedaling on busy roads or in natural environments.
First impressions and comfort
I started using Shokz during my training sessions and long exploratory rides. When I started my “career” as an ultra cyclist, needing to distract myself while pedaling I used numerous traditional wired headphones that lasted me very few days.
I had to constantly replace this one because of the cord coiling and the fact that they were not water resistant, so under the advice of a friend I switched to the Shokz headphones intrigued by their particular workings. I tried at first the intermediate models and after miserably lost it I decided to upgrade on the top model and I must say that the sound quality and fit are significantly different so it worth to invest a few more euros.
From the first time I wore them what I noticed was the comfort. Very light, they fit easily over the ears and do not cause that annoying pressure that many other headphones cause after hours of use. Even during strenuous stretches or under a helmet, they do not move, remaining stable at all times.
Safety first
As a cyclist, safety has always been one of my priorities. With Shokz, not only can I listen to music, but I can also be fully aware of traffic around me, horns, voices or even the sound of tires approaching. This is especially useful during my more remote routes, where narrow roads and hairpin bends require my full attention. Although I prefer not to use them on busy stretches, where the traffic requires special attention.
During one of my many rides, while climbing a hill immersed in the Iblei Mountains, I was able to enjoy one of my playlists without losing contact with the surrounding nature. I could hear the birds singing, the wind blowing in the trees, and even the sound of my tires on the gravel. A unique feeling of total immersion.
Audio and functionality
Speaking of audio quality, don’t expect the powerful bass of traditional headphones, but the sound is clear and well balanced. The selling point is not absolute fidelity, but the ability to deliver a pleasant sound experience while keeping one eye, or rather one ear, on safety.
The Shokz have simple, intuitive controls adjust the volume or answer a call without having to stop. In addition, they are water and sweat resistant, making them ideal for any weather condition. However, on the other hand, it is true that the voice during calls is very noisy because of the wind blowing on the microphone; all my friends complain about how windy my audios are and you can’t understand anything. So if you want to opt for this flaw, you should wear them under a buff-type scarf to isolate the wind noise. In an enclosed environment, on the other hand, the voice comes out with good quality
Autonomy and durability
Another aspect that won me over is the battery life. The Shokz offers up to 8 hours of continuous listening time, more than enough for a long day on the saddle. You won’t have to worry about recharging them during your tour, leaving you free to focus on the road and the scenery.
Why do I recommend them?
Shokz bone conduction headphones have become a must-have accessory for my cycling. They offer a winning combination of comfort, safety and practicality that you are unlikely to find in other devices. Whether you’re an urban cyclist or a long-distance adventurer, these headphones are a great choice to enhance your experience without compromising your focus on the road.
Conclusion
My experience with the Shokz has taught me that you don’t have to choose between listening to music and paying attention to the road. With these headphones, you can have both especially when used in combo with the Garmin Varia. For me, it’s a way to make every outing more motivating, safe and enjoyable. And for you?
